Removing Smoke & Soot After a Fire in Graves & McCracken County

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A FIRE?

Removal of Smoke and Soot From all Surfaces

SERVPRO of Paducah and Mayfield uses specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Cleaning and Sanitizing

SERVPRO of Paducah and Mayfield will clean all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Thermal Fogging

Thermal fogging is a process where a deodorizer is heated and sprayed in a fog form. Because it's in a fog form, the mixture is able to permeate even the toughest-to-reach spots. The mixture attaches to the smoke particles and absorbs them, thus neutralizing any odor.

These tools and techniques are part of the cleanup arsenal SERVPRO of Paducah & Mayfield use to make it "Like it never even happened."

Where There's Smoke There's Fire in Graves & McCracken County

7/15/2022 (Permalink)

Fire is Fast, Fire is Hot, Fire is Dark, Fire is Deadly!

Did you know smoke is poisonous? It kills more people in home fires than flames.

Follow These Steps to Protect Yourself and Your Family from Home Fire Smoke:

  • Install Smoke Alarms
  • Make a Home Fire Escape Plan
  • Practice Your Fire Escape Plan
  • Get out of your home right away if you see smoke or the smoke alarm sounds
  • Get low to the ground and get under the smoke to your exit
  • Go to your outside meeting place and call 911

If you can't escape from a fire:

  • Stuff wet towels or sheets around the door and vents to keep the smoke out
  • Call 911 and tell them where you are
  • Open a window slightly and place a bright cloth outside to signal your location. Close the window so the air doesn't pull the smoke into the room

Tornado Season: Tips to Weather the Storm

7/6/2022 (Permalink)

A large percentage of the population looks forward to Spring for a number of reasons: spring forward, spring weather, college basketball, The Masters, Golf Season, Crappie Fishing, Easter, the best fruits are coming in season and more. Although all of those are positive things to look forward to for Spring, something negative we have to look out for is tornadoes. March through June is tornado season. Tips to weather the storm are crucial for your safety. If a tornado strikes your home or business and causes damage, SERVPRO of Paducah and Mayfield can make it “Like it never even happened.”

Here are three tactics, according to Ready.gov, you can implement to prepare now for a tornado:

  • Know your area’s tornado risk. In the U.S., the Midwest and the Southeast have a greater risk for tornadoes.
  • Pay attention to weather reports. Meteorologists can predict when conditions might be right for a tornado.
  • Identify and practice going to a safe shelter in the event of high winds, such as a safe room built using FEMA criteria or a storm shelter built to ICC 500 standards. The next best protection is a small, interior, windowless room on the lowest level of a sturdy building.

There are a number of other tips to help keep you safe before, during and after a tornado. To learn more click here https://www.ready.gov/tornadoes

Storm Season in Ballard and McCracken County Kentucky

5/31/2022 (Permalink)

FLOODS

Preparing for a Flood:

  • Know your risks for floods
  • Make a plan for your household, including your pets
  • Check to see if you need Flood Insurance

Flooding is a temporary overflow of water onto land that is normally dry (bet you already knew that). Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States. Failing to evacuate flooded areas or entering flood waters can lead to injury or death.

Floods may:

  • Result from rain, snow, coastal storms, storm surges and overflows of dams and other water systems.
  • Develop slowly or quickly. Flash floods can come with no warning.
  • Cause outages, disrupt transportation, damage buildings and create landslides.

If you are under a flood warning:

  • Do not walk, swim or drive through flood waters. Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
  • Remember, just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
  • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water.

Weather Changes Happening in McCracken & Graves County Kentucky

4/1/2022 (Permalink)

It's that day again - April 1st - April Fools Day!

Storm season in here again too, and they are no joking matter.  Two days ago wind gusts were reported of 40-50 miles per hour!

At 50+ MPH winds are officially classified as “damaging”. Shingles will be blown off. Tree limbs and other debris will be picked up. Damaged or water-saturated trees will start to fall.

Often storms and high winds can weaken even the biggest tree limbs that one day come crashing down.  It's recommended to have a qualified person inspect your trees for dead or rotting limbs and have them removed.

It is also a good idea to review what your homeowner's insurance covers so you know your responsibility if your tree falls on the neighbor's house.

Be safe!

Water Mitigation in Mayfield and Paducah Kentucky

4/1/2022 (Permalink)

Water is essential for life. At the same time, water is the single leading carrier of pathogens in the world today. The elements necessary to support microbial growth are always present; all that is required to initiate a destructive chain reaction of microbial growth is the addition of excess moisture. Where this happens, microorganisms will rapidly multiply and cause structural breakdown (dry rot & wet rot), create odors, and potentially create serious health issues for the building occupants. Too much science?

Why is this important for you to know? When a water loss occurs, either by a busted pipe, ice maker leak, sewage backup, or flood, the single most important thing to know is how much time the structure remains abnormally wet. This is why the most critical course of action is to respond quickly!

SERVPRO uses proven methods and technology to extract excess water for any emergency. Then once the water has been extracted we start the drying process. Air movers, Dehumidifiers, special drying equipment are used to remove excess moisture. Just because it looks dry - doesn't mean it is dry. We monitor the materials affected to be sure we're using the right equipment for the right amount of time!

SERVPRO of Paducah & Mayfield is available 24/7 for all your Fire & Water cleanup and restoration.  Call us at 270-443-4555

    • Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful!
    • If safe to enter, and weather permits; open windows and doors to “air out” structure and reduce smoke odors.

Practice Your Home Fire Escape Plan for Western Kentucky

4/1/2022 (Permalink)

Creating and practicing a home fire escape plan is simple. Follow the steps below to make sure everyone in your home is prepared and knows what to do in case of a home fire.

  • Make a written home fire escape plan and practice getting out in under 2 minutes.
  • Make sure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home and in each bedroom. Test them twice a year.
  • Learn the best practices for home fire safety and fire safety with children.

Make an escape plan:

  • Learn two ways out of every room in your home, in case one exit is blocked or dangerous to use. A second way out can include an escape ladder for rooms on an upper level.
  • Practice getting low and moving to your exits in case there is smoke.
  • Choose a safe meeting place a safe distance from your home.
  • Have a home fire drill at least twice a year.

Conduct a Home Fire Drill:

Fires can start anywhere in the home and at any time, so run through the plan at different times of the day or night and practice different ways out.

SAFE WINTER DRIVING TIPS for PADUCAH & MAYFIELD

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

Anytime the weather service alerts us for a winter storm we need to prepare.  Needless to say, stay home unless it's absolutely necessary to drive.  Here are a few tips I found from the NHTSA and OSHA (click link below for the full article).

The three P's of Safe Winter Driving:

  • Prepare for the trip- Maintain your car; Plan your route; Practice cold weather driving; Stopping distances are longer on on water-covered snow and ice
  • Protect Yourself - Buckle up; Children 12 and under are much safer in the back
  • Prevent Crashes - Drugs and alcohol never mix with driving; Slow down; Avoid Fatigue
  • Watch for pedestrians who may be walking along side the road

Winter driving can be hazardous and scary.  Additional preparations can help make the trip safer.

Detecting Water Damage "Behind the Scenes" in Paducah & Mayfield Kentucky

1/13/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage can be anything from a small leak to a gushing stream of water from a busted pipe.  How can I test my home for water damage?

Inside the home, look for the following for signs of water damage:
  1. Water rings on the ceiling or walls pointing to a leak in the pipes.
  2. Soft or sagging spots on the floor, especially near the tub, shower, sinks.
  3. Cracked or warped tile, laminate or wood flooring.
  4. Look in the cabinet under the sink for watermarks, warping and discoloration that may indicate leaking pipes.
  5. Trust your sense of smell. If there is a mildew or musty smell, it's likely there was water damage and now there may be a potential mold issue that will require mold remediation.

Some of the advanced technology we use to detect and measure possible water issues are:

  • Handheld moisture meters that detects the percentage of moisture in the floor or wall.
  • Infrared Camera - allows the technician to see the hot & cold spots that can indicate serious issues.

Timing is everything with a possible water leak - so don't wait!  Let SERVPRO check your home or business with our state of the art technology.  The longer you wait, the more damage water can do.

If you believe you have a water leak call SERVPRO of Paducah & Mayfield at 270-443-4555. We are available 24/7.

Ever Heard of Thundersnow in Ballard and McCracken County?

1/11/2022 (Permalink)

We saw some crazy weather over the last few weeks.  It was in the 60's and 70's around Christmas.  Then we experienced freezing temperatures with 3 to 6 inches of snow in Western Kentucky, and heavier amounts south and east of us.  Predictions came true on Saturday with warming temperatures, unusual Lightning and loud Thunder with heavy rain in some places.  It didn't take long for the snow to disappear!  :(

Had the temperatures stayed cold we could have experienced the Thundersnow effect.  Never heard of it-Thundersnow, also known as a winter thunderstorm or a thundersnowstorm, is an unusual kind of thunderstorm with snow falling as the primary precipitation.

We heard tremendous claps of Thunder and long streaks of Lightning across the sky last Saturday.  However the precipitation was Rain instead of Snow.  :(

The Rain on top of the Snow caused flooding in some areas.  Perhaps you experienced some water damage in your home or business from all the excess water.

Available 24/7 SERVPRO of Paducah and Mayfield is here to help.  Call 270-443-4555 for Fire and Water Cleanup and Restoration.

What To Do After A Fire In Ballard and Fulton County Kentucky?

1/4/2022 (Permalink)

Everyone is okay!  No one was home when it happened.  An electrical short caused a fire in the kitchen.  The fire marshal is going to inspect our home now to be sure it's safe to go in and assess the damage.

Luckily only a couple appliances were destroyed but smoke and soot went everywhere.  The smell of smoke is making me cough as I walk around. What do we do now? Who do we call to clean up this mess up?

Our neighbor had water damage from a busted pipe last winter and they called SERVPRO of Paducah and Mayfield.  She was very pleased with their work. I got on my phone and searched for Fire Damage and Cleanup.  Their name popped up along with some information:

We Can Help in the Aftermath of Fire Damage

Beyond just the fire damage, smoke and soot can cause health effects, creating a hazardous situation. Even if a fire is contained in one area, smoke and soot can travel throughout a structure. Our professionals are highly-trained, with the experience, tools and knowledge to clean up fire and smoke damage. In keeping with our goal to restore your home and cherished possessions to their pre-fire condition, we use appropriate personal protective measures to safely clean, deodorize and restore your property.

Bursting Pipes in McCracken and Graves County

1/3/2022 (Permalink)

Even though last week we had unusually warm temperatures, winter is definitely here now!

Water damage cleanup up and restoration is by far the largest percentage of work we do at SERVPRO of Paducah & Mayfield.

Some of the steps experts recommend may go against your better instincts of conserving water and heat, but the extra expense is nothing compared with a hefty repair bill. Here’s what to do:

Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines in the garage.

Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing, especially if your sinks are on an exterior wall. (If you have small children, be sure to remove any harmful cleaners and household chemicals.)

Let the cold water drip from a faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe—even at a trickle—helps prevent pipes from freezing.

Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during day and night. Again, during a cold snap is not the time to set back the thermostat at night to save a few bucks on your heating bill.

If you plan to be away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

For the long term, add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in those areas. And to prevent drafts, seal cracks and openings around windows, doors, and at sill plates, where the house rests on its foundation.

Urgency is the key to extracting, cleaning, and drying water soaked areas.  Especially to avoid mold and mildew.

How to put out an Electrical Fire in Mayfield and Paducah

11/1/2021 (Permalink)

In September we provided information on how to put out Grease Fires.  Today we follow that up with Electrical Fire Safety (see Rachel Engel's full article here https://bit.ly/3w5tHUY )

Winter typically means spending more time indoors and using more electricity – to heat our homes, power devices that keep us entertained and light up our houses indoors and out during the holidays.

In an effort to keep your community safe, please keep these tips for combatting an electrical fire handy in the event of an emergency, and share them with friends and family. Knowing how to respond quickly could be the difference between a small fire and a devastating disaster.

IF AN ELECTRICAL FIRE STARTS

1. Cut off the electricity. If the device that is causing the electrical fire is found, and you can reach the cord and outlet safely, unplug it.

2. Add sodium bicarbonate. If the fire is small, you may put it out by smothering it with baking soda.

3. Remove the oxygen source. It may also be put out by removing the oxygen source with clothing or a heavy blanket if the fire is small and it is safe to do so.

4. Don’t use water to put it out. Water is a natural conductor of electricity and if you throw water on an electrical fire, you can get shocked or electrocuted. Also, water may enable to fire to spread by conducting electricity throughout the room and potentially igniting flammable materials.

5. Check your fire extinguisher. Electrical fires are a Class C fire, which means that you will need an extinguisher that is appropriate for this type of fire. Most residential fire extinguishers are multi-purpose and labeled ABC, but it is crucial to verify this before using it on an electrical fire.

Safe Operating of Fire Extinguishers for Paducah & Mayfield

10/26/2021 (Permalink)

Fact

Poor maintenance and incorrect usage of fire extinguishers in the home are two key reasons small house fires can spread endangering lives and causing considerable damage to property. House fires can be brought under control within the first few minutes of ignition if attended to correctly with an extinguisher that is well maintained, which can buy valuable time before the Fire Services arrive.

How to operate a fire extinguisher

There are a number of different types of portable fire extinguishers, each can be identified by the colour coding and labelling. Check that the extinguisher you intend to use is suitable for the type of fire encountered eg a water extinguisher must never be used on any fire involving electrical equipment.

There are four (4) basic steps for using modern portable fire extinguishers.

The acronym PASS is used to describe these four basic steps.

  1. Pull (Pin)
Pull pin at the top of the extinguisher, breaking the seal. When in place, the pin keeps the handle from being pressed and accidentally operating the extinguisher. Immediately test the extinguisher. (Aiming away from the operator) This is to ensure the extinguisher works and also shows the operator how far the stream travels
  2. Aim
Approach the fire standing at a safe distance. Aim the nozzle or outlet towards the base of the fire.
  3. Squeeze
Squeeze the handles together to discharge the extinguishing agent inside. To stop discharge, release the handles.
  4. Sweep
Sweep the nozzle from side to side as you approach the fire, directing the extinguishing agent at the base of the flames. After an A Class fire is extinguished, probe for smouldering hot spots that could reignite the fuel.

Practice Your Home Fire Escape Plan

10/9/2021 (Permalink)

Creating and practicing a home fire escape plan is simple. Follow the steps below to make sure everyone in your home is prepared and knows what to do in case of a home fire.

  • Make an Escape Plan:  Learn two ways out of every room in your home, in case one exit is blocked or dangerous to use. A second way out can include an escape ladder for rooms on an upper level.
  • Children & Fire Safety:  It is important to have a plan when there are children in your home. Children may become very scared and need clear direction and help getting out of the house. They may not know how to escape or what to do unless an adult shows them.
  • Conduct a Home Fire Drill:  Fires can start anywhere in the home and at any time, so run through the plan at different times of the day or night and practice different ways out.

Click here https://www.ready.gov/home-fire-escape-plan to watch a short video and read more about how to develop and plan for an escape plan.

Kitchen Grease Fires

9/16/2021 (Permalink)

COOKING ACCOUNTS FOR 50% OF ALL RESIDENTIAL FIRES IN THE U.S.

HOW TO PUT OUT A GREASE FIRE:

  • NEVER EVER USE WATER TO PUT OUT A GREASE FIRE
What Happens If You Add Water to a Grease Fire? Even a small amount of water dropped into a pan or deep fryer filled with burning oil will sink to the bottom, become superheated and erupt. ... Water molecules are polar, and oils are nonpolar. As a result, oils are repelled by water molecules
  • Turn off the source of the heat on the stove. Do not try to move the pot because you don't want to accidentally spill or splash the burning oil.
  • Remove all oxygen from the flame. You can cover with another pot or pan. Do not cover it with a glass lid because the glass lid may shatter.
  • If you can't cover it, dump lots of baking soda on it.
  • Use a chemical fire extinguisher on the grease fire. There are different kinds of extinguishers. Not all can be used on a grease fire.
  • Know where the extinguisher is located and learn how to use it.
  • Don't leave the cooking unattended.

Staying Hydrated in Paducah & Mayfield Kentucky

8/18/2021 (Permalink)

Most of the time our blogs are about how water damage can be devastating to your home or business.

When do we need water?

Here's an article from www.SafetyToolboxTopics.com on the importance of hydration:

We've all experienced it at some point when working or playing hard – fatigue sets in, your mouth feels dry and your legs are heavy and maybe you even get a headache. These are all common signs of dehydration.

When you are working hard, body fluid is lost through sweat. If the fluid lost through sweat is not replaced, dehydration and early fatigue are unavoidable. Losing even 2% of body fluids (less than 3.5 pounds in a 180-pound person) can impair performance by increasing fatigue and affecting cognitive skills. During the summer heat it's easy for to become dehydrated if you don't drink enough fluids to replace what is lost in sweat.

However, dehydration can easily be prevented

  • When to drink: Ensure you drink before you start working, trying to catch-up for lost fluids after a period of time is very difficult. Also, drink before you get thirsty. By the time you're thirsty you are already dehydrated, so it's important to drink at regular intervals – especially when it is hot outside.
  • What to drink: Water is truly one of the best things to drink. Research also shows that a lightly flavored beverage with a small amount of sodium encourages people to drink enough to stay hydrated. The combination of flavor and electrolytes in a sports drink like Gatorade provides one of the best choices to help you stay properly hydrated.
  • What not to drink: During activity, avoid drinks with high sugar content such as soda and even fruit juices. These are slow to absorb into the body. Also alcohol and caffeinated beverages should be avoided.

Many people ask how much to drink and that truly depends on your activity level and how much your body is losing fluids. In general, when you are working and sweating, you should drink at least every half-hour. Ensure you are drinking enough to replace your lost fluids. A good rule of thumb from a wise man says: “if you aren’t urinating, you’re not drinking enough”.

STAY SAFE!

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

I think we all would agree, keeping your business open over the last 12-15 months has been an unbelievable challenge.  You followed the rules, kept your chin up, and plowed forward with the same fortitude and tenacity that made you successful.

Keeping your business open is also our mission when an emergency happens.  Not long ago, the office manager of a local professional business showed up on Monday morning to start the week, only to see water gushing out of the bottom of the front door!  She was obviously in disbelief.  A water connection had burst over the weekend.

Who would she call?  We had done work for one of the other employees, and she recommended they call SERVPRO of Paducah & Mayfield.  Our water mitigation team wasted no time loading the special equipment needed to extract the water and dry the floors and walls. Make a Plan for Fire Escape

4/5/2021 (Permalink)

Create and Practice a Fire Escape Plan

In the event of a fire, remember that every second counts. Escape plans help you get out of your home quickly. Twice each year, practice your home fire escape plan. Some tips to consider when preparing this plan include:

  • Find two ways to get out of each room in the event the primary way is blocked by fire or smoke.
  • Make sure that windows are not stuck, screens can be taken out quickly and that security bars can be properly opened.
  • Practice feeling your way out of the house in the dark or with your eyes closed.
  • Teach children not to hide from firefighters.

Smoke Alarms

A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly home fire.

  • Replace batteries twice a year, unless you are using 10-year lithium batteries.
  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement.
  • Replace the entire smoke alarm unit every 10 years or according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Never disable a smoke alarm while cooking – it can be a deadly mistake.

Please refer to https://www.ready.gov/home-fires

for a complete description of this plan and more.

Paducah & Mayfield Smoke and Soot Cleanup

4/2/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Paducah & Mayfield will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises, therefore, smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

High Winds

4/1/2021 (Permalink)

Today is April 1st - April Fools Day!

However, it was no joke when the couple living in this house was suddenly awakened by a loud noise at 5:30 one morning. They described it as sounding like an explosion. Fortunately, no one was injured. As you can see in the picture the huge limb fell within inches of the back door.

Often storms and high winds can weaken even the biggest tree limbs and one day come crashing down.

It's the time of year when we get strong storms, tornadoes, and high winds. Have your trees inspected for dead or rotting limbs before this happens to you!

You also need to check your homeowner's insurance to know what your responsibility is if your tree falls on the neighbor's house.

Call SERVPRO of Paducah & Mayfield anytime 24/7 if you need Fire & Water cleanup and restoration!

Earth's Most Precious Resource - Water

4/1/2021 (Permalink)

HOME FIRES

2/9/2021 (Permalink)

In just two minutes a fire can become life-threatening. In five minutes, a residence can, be engulfed in flames.

Learn About Fires

  • Fire is FAST! In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for it to be engulfed in flames.
  • Fire is HOT! Heat is more threatening than flames. Room temperatures in a fire can be 100 degrees at floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level. Inhaling this super-hot air will scorch your lungs and melt clothes to your skin.
  • Fire is DARK! Fire starts bright, but quickly produces black smoke and complete darkness.
  • Fire is DEADLY! Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do. Fire produces poisonous gases that make you disoriented and drowsy. Asphyxiation is the leading cause of fire deaths, exceeding burns by a 3-to-1 ratio.

Before a Fire

  • Replace the entire smoke alarm unit every 10 years or according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Never disable a smoke alarm while cooking – it can be a deadly mistake.

Sewer Cleanup

1/18/2021 (Permalink)

Sewer backups should be considered an emergency since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals have specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Advanced Restoration Technology & Equpment

1/18/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage can cause large loss to floors and structures but can also create the perfect environment for mold to grow.  The longer the water sits, the higher the risk for complete loss and risky air quality due to the mold growth.  Luckily, SERVPRO of Paducah/Mayfield has high tech equipment that is designed to remove the humidity from the air, even in small spaces that have poor airflow, when unwanted water is involved.  At the same time, we have water extractors to remove standing water, then powerful fans to dry the structures.  We also have high tech equipment that can detect moisture on surfaces as well as in the air.  It is imperative to get our equipment in place as soon as possible when water is an issue. The water restoration process is completed by our highly trained, local technicians who are IICRC (The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) Certified. The technicians will also document the drying process to ensure that your property has been dried properly. When our team is done cleaning up the damage it will be, “Like it never even happened.” Call SERVPRO of Paducah for all your water damage needs today at 270-443-4555.

Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment

Scientific drying principles rely upon specialized equipment to detect, measure, and monitor a property’s moisture levels. Recent advances, like infrared cameras, can help us detect water through a wall, ceiling, or floor.

  • An infrared camera may be used to identify water location for thorough water removal.
  • Sensitive moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation

Water Extraction Equipment

Powerful extraction equipment speeds the drying process by removing the bulk of the water from your home or business.

  • Submersible and gas-powered pumps for continuous pumping of high-level water.
  • Truck-mounted and portable extraction units perform efficient water removal.

Drying Equipment

Industrial strength air movers and dehumidifiers are needed to remove the remaining moisture from ceiling, walls, and floors of your home or business. Proper drying helps to prevent swelling and warping of floors, walls, and furniture.

  • High-speed air movers causes moisture to evaporate at a faster pace
  • Industrial grade dehumidifiers pull the water vapor from the air.

Odor Removal and Deodorization

Water and fire damage often causes powerful odors. The machines we use remove airborne contaminants and control the air quality during the restoration and cleanup process.

  • Air scrubbers
  • Thermal foggers and deodorization agents

Sanitizing Agents, Germicides, and Anti-Microbial Treatments

The use of OSHA-approved cleaning agents may be needed to clean and remove odors and/or contaminants on your property.

  • Deodorization products control odors from excessive moisture.
  • Disinfection products stop the growth of bacteria, fungi, mildew, and other harmful microorganisms.

How to Get Rid of That Smoke Smell-Thermal Fogging

1/11/2021 (Permalink)

When fires occur, the smell of smoke can be the most lasting damage. Think of the last time you fried chicken or french fries. Now, think about the smell of wood smoke at a campfire!

SERVPRO of Paducah & Mayfield uses many techniques to combat smoke damage. One such technique is thermal fogging - a process by which small particles are created to mimic smoke. These "smoke" particles are deodorized and penetrate the tiny spaces (fabric, cracks in walls, etc) where smoke particles might have been absorbed. The above image shows thermal fogging being used in a church where a small fire began and created significant smoke damage.

It's also important to match the sources of the odor. When the odor-causing source was smoke, then a "smoke" treatment with matching additives can be applied. The same procedure is used if the source is a grease fire, or a plastic fire, etc.

If you have smoke damage in your home or business, call SERVPRO of Paducah/Mayfield at (270) 443-4555.

  • moisture sensors
  • moisture meters
  • extractors

Commercial Carpet Cleaning

11/18/2020 (Permalink)

Professional cleaning can address moderate and heavy soil conditions in your carpets. How often you’ll need professional cleaning depends on soil build-up, traffic, type and color of carpeting. A good rule of thumb would be to professionally clean your carpet every 12 months. The best advice is to clean carpets before they become totally saturated with soil. If you wait until carpets look really dirty, the carpets may never be restored to their former appearance. Dirt builds up in layers, and when a carpet looks dirty you are only seeing the dirt at the tips of the fibers. More dirt is hiding below the surface down near the base of the pile, causing damage to the carpet. When a carpet is saturated with dirt, the soil has penetrated crevices and has become firmly lodged.

SERVPRO Of Paducah & Mayfield will get the job done right. For a cleaning backed by state-of-the-art equipment, over 40 years of experience and Professionals trained to the highest standards, call us today at 270-443-4555. With over 1,700 Franchises nationwide, there’s a SERVPRO Professional nearby and ready to serve you.

Electrical Fires

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

Winter typically means spending more time indoors and using more electricity – to heat our homes, power devices that keep us entertained and light up our houses indoors and out during the holidays.

But electricity is a hidden danger to the residents in your community. Because it is so frequently used, most people tend to underestimate the risk potential and dangers that come with electrical fires.

In fact, one-third of all home structure fires stem from an electrical source, and because they tend to be difficult to identify, they are usually much more dangerous and destructive than other types of fires.

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

HUMIDITY & MOLD

10/12/2020 (Permalink)

MOLD! It grows on many surfaces & may cause health effects. Often, it's caused by humidity. Indoor relative humidity should be kept below 60%-ideally between 30%-50% if possible. Humidity levels can rise in a building because of several things. One, is turning off the HVAC system when a facility is not being used. Or, to save money, raise the thermostat much higher than usual when leaving town for a few days.

A function of the HVAC system is to remove moisture from the air before it's distributed throughout the building or home.

We suspect this will happen more because of the pandemic shutdown. Please check your facility to be sure you keeping the humidity as low as possible.

Most Common Water Damages in the Home

8/6/2020 (Permalink)

What is water damage?

Unfortunately, there are many different forms of water damage that you can find in your home. The SERVPRO of Paducah team has complied a list of the five most common types of water damage that we usually find in our client's homeowner.

Five most common types of water damage

1. Leaking or burst pipes- Pipes can burst for many reasons, making them a common cause of water damage. A lot of the times in Kentucky, pipes will freeze during the cold temperatures and eventually burst. Other common causes are unregulated water pressure, inevitable wear and tear, and other temperature changes.

2. HVAC units- When homeowners forget to check on their air conditioner and provide proper maintenance, these units can accumulate moisture and eventually result in a leak. This can lead to an even bigger problem if mold begins to form.

3. Clogged gutters- This water damage is typically found in the foundation of your home. When gutters are clogged with various debris, they do not operate as they are intended to and overflow at the expensive of your home.

4. Faulty household appliances- Washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers, and hot water tanks can all cause a lot of damage to your home. Many of these appliances are viewed as necessity, so it is very unfortunate that these appliances are all susceptible to creating damage.

5. General plumbing issues- Plumbing damage is one of the most difficult forms of water damage for the average homeowner to detect. Common signs of this form of damage are dripping faucets, leaks around your tub or shower, and overflowing toilets.

SERVPRO of Paducah can help

As you can see, most of the most common forms of water damage that we have listed are inevitable. That is why it is important for you to have your local SERVPRO franchise within quick reach. Water damage can quickly worsen if homeowners do not immediately address the situation, due to molding and further deterioration.

Call the SERVPRO of Paducah at (270) 443-4555 today to quickly and efficiently address your water damage issues, for a home as good as new.

Burnt Kitchen Ceiling The Kitchen Ceiling where the fire originated.

Storms Cause Major Damage

4/7/2020 (Permalink)

Tree in Bathroom This is the tree that fell through the roof into the bathroom.

When a large tree fell onto the roof of this duplex, much of it ended up in the bathroom where it damaged plumbing lines, adding to the water damage already caused by the heavy rains accompanying the wind storm. The property owners knew to call SERVPRO of Paducah based on our word of mouth reputation. Our emergency crews immediately responded. The water was shut off, the tree was removed from the structure, and then it was secured with a tarp. Standing water was extracted, and wet non-salvageable materials were identified with a thermal imaging camera and moisture meters, and then removed. The structure was rapidly dried with our equipment, and reconstruction followed. This allowed the tenants to return to their homes, and the income loss for the property owners was mitigated.

Water Can cause Lots of Problems

4/7/2020 (Permalink)

water upstairs leaves ceiling wet The ceiling damage caused by a water line in the upstairs bath.

For days prior to its discovery, water had run from a supply line from an upstairs vanity in this upscale home. This resulted in heavy damage to every room on both levels but a living room. Due to the volume of water that flooded the home,  and the length of time involved, much of the materials could not be saved. High end cabinets, high grade wood floor, and ceramic tile were some of the materials involved. SERVPRO of Paducah responded, and the mitigation that was performed prevented additional problems such as mold growth. The structure is now dry and in the process of selecting the new cabinets, flooring, and other choices necessary for reconstruction. The availability of our in-house designers greatly streamlines this process.

Fire & Smoke Damage

4/7/2020 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Wall This is what fire can do very quickly to any home!

Fire & Smoke Damage

When the firefighters leave, it may seem like the danger has passed and the home is safe from further destruction, but without professionals to help clean the smoke damage, the building may never return to normal.  While the principles behind fire restoration are simple, it requires a lot of experience and manpower to perform adequately, and this means that it shouldn’t be attempted by a homeowner on his or her own.  The trained professionals at SERVPRO of Paducah should be called on-site immediately.  We can clean smoke damage and restore items affected by the fire, but we must be brought to the site as soon as possible to halt the ongoing issues that ash residue can cause.

The only way to properly clean smoke and fire damage is to be extremely thorough.  Ash residue is easily disturbed and can spread through the building with ease, causing nearly everything to need restoration.  The experts at SERVPRO of Paducah will identify what can and cannot be salvaged and will remove any built-up ash residue that is coating surfaces.  Over time, ash builds up in layers, and may form into a lacquer-like consistency.  Once this is done, the restorers will locate the source of the odor, and treat it with specialized detergents that are formulated for neutralizing this kind of odor.  Once materials are treated, they may be sealed off to prevent any further odor from permeating the air in the future.

The newest hotel in town knew who to call when they had their first water damage.  A plumbing overflow on the fifth floor damaged several guest rooms and hallways all the way down to the first floor, where it damaged several offices and the service hallway. Our marketing person had already met with them months before to prepare an Emergency Ready Profile. SERVPRO’s rapid response to extract water, do the necessary demo, place state of the art drying equipment, and perform the limited reconstruction made possible by the mitigation, ensured that this hotel remained in business and was returned to fully operational within days. The general manager was extremely pleased with our services and promised to call us for any of his future needs. Call SERVPRO of Paducah with all water damage needs at 270-443-4555.

The Fire Restoration Process by Professionals

2/12/2020 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Bedroom This a major fire that damaged room greatly. It looks horrible but was able to be mitigated.

In a time of a commercial fire, it is best to work with the professionals in Paducah, KY. In times of distress, it is comforting to be surrounded by excellence and a team that has a plan for success. A franchise that has been there before will produce the best results and deliver timely fire restoration. Insurance companies and adjusters like to work with experienced technicians, which is why SERVPRO is the preferred company for many agents. A SERVPRO franchise provides a claims inventory service that itemizes losses and expenses and captures it all on Excel documents and in photos.

The Proven Process

Each case of fire restoration is unique, but a well-planned process governs the entire recovery effort. The critical steps include the following actions:

  • Inspection and fire damage assessment
  • Board-up and roof-tarp services, if needed
  • Water removal and drying
  • Smoke and soot removal
  • Cleaning and restoration

In the case of a fire rebuild, the technicians will restore when possible and replace those items that are too damaged. A commercial fire mitigation team has the training to restore the building to its pre-fire condition. The job isn't finished until the final steps have been taken and the insurance company has been notified. Choosing the right team means that all the work is completed by one company.

The Tested Approach

When a fire strikes a business, there's no need to reinvent the wheel when a SERVPRO franchise is nearby. Whether it is rebuilding services or the removal of smoke damage, trained technicians take the lead and restore the building quickly. No portion of the building will be overlooked. If water damage results due to fire fighting efforts, the professionals are familiar with water removal and will look for the potential for mold growth. This is all part of the fire restoration process. The building will look "Like it never even happened."

Levels of Commercial Damage

2/12/2020 (Permalink)

No matter the level we will help you!

There are three levels of commercial damage that are considered:

Level 1

Level 1 is a small commercial loss typically involving 15,000 square feet or less of affected floor space. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a small commercial loss may include, but are not limited to, a stand-alone retail establishment, a small church, a daycare facility, a small shopping center, a small warehouse or manufacturing facility, or a stand-alone administrative building. A Level 1 loss can also be a small portion of a much larger structure.

Level 2

Level 2 is a midsize commercial loss typically involving 15,000 to 60,000 square feet of affected floor space. The building or buildings involved are usually multi-level or greatly divided spaces. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a Level 2 loss may include, but are not limited to, a small multi-family property, a midsize church or school, a small shopping center, a multi-tenant administration facility, or a midsize warehouse or manufacturing facility. A Level 2 loss can also be just a portion of a much larger structure.

Level 3

Level 3 is a large commercial loss typically involving more than 60,000 square feet of affected floor space. The building or buildings involved will likely be large multi-level structures. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a Level 3 loss can include, but are not limited to, a large church, hospital, school, or university; a large multi-family property; a mid- to high-rise retail or administration facility; a large industrial, manufacturing, or warehouse facility; or a large strip-style shopping center or shopping mall. This is the level at which it would be appropriate to refer to the project as a “large loss.”

What To Do About Freezing Pipes

1/22/2020 (Permalink)

To keep pipes from freezing on an outside wall:

  1. Let hot and cold water trickle or drip at night from a faucet.
  2. Open cabinet doors to allow more heat to get to un-insulated pipes under a sink or near an outer wall.
  3. Make sure heat is left on and set no lower than 55 degrees.
  4. If you plan to be away: (1) Have someone check your house daily to make sure the heat is still on to prevent freezing, or (2) drain and shut off the water system (except indoor sprinkler systems).

If Pipes Freeze:

  1. Make sure you and your family knows how to shut off the water, in case pipes burst.
  2. NEVER try to thaw a pipe with an open flame or torch. Use a hair dryer instead.
  3. Always be careful of the potential for electric shock in and around standing water.

MOLD: The Threat That Could Cause Major Issues

1/22/2020 (Permalink)

There are over 100,000 forms of fungi that can turn into mold. Mold in large amounts has the potential to cause health issues or even worse. Mold growths, or colonies, can start to grow on a damp surface in 24 to 48 hours. When water gets into a part of your home or business, getting the water out before mold has time to form is crucial. Mold reproduces by spores that can travel through the air, allowing mold to spread rapidly.

If your home has water damage due to:

  • flooding
  • sewage back-up
  • plumbing or roof leaks
  • damp basement or crawl space
  • overflows from sinks or bathtubs
  • high humidity (from steam cooking, dryer vents, humidifiers)

...mildew and mold will likely develop within 24 to 48 hours (though it may not always be noticeable!)

If you think you may have a mold problem due to one of these issues, call SERVPRO of Paducah at 270-443-4555 today!

Lots of Rain Brings Flooding

1/22/2020 (Permalink)

When heavy storms hit, they can bring flood damage with them and cause intense destruction to many homes. In the case of your home, the intense storm flooded the streets and backed up sewage drainage which we have seen in recent weeks here in Paducah. In just a few hours of storming, intense wind, and rain, your home had become the host to foul-smelling black water.

Whenever your home experiences flood damage, it is wise to reach out for help right away. After all, water-based damages get far worse as time goes on, as they become a breeding ground for mold damage. However, because of the black water in your home, the urgency to get help is even more pressing.

Black water is a categorization of standing water. It is water filled with potential contaminants, such as bio hazardous materials, sewage, and petroleum gas. Here at SERVPRO, our highly trained technicians know exactly how to combat black water.

Once we arrive at your home, our SERVPRO technicians can get to work straight away. Due to the sheer volume of black water, we must remove it to inspect the damages to your floors, furniture, and walls. We can use truck-mounted extractors and wet/dry vacuums to remove the water and then dispose of it safely away from your home. Once the water has been removed, we can investigate and begin to take inventory.

Due to the nature of black water, anything carpeted or upholstered cannot be clean, as it cannot be guaranteed safe. All affected carpets and fabrics must be thrown away, but SERVPRO can help you make an insurance claim. Once belongings are removed, we can focus on demolishing the damaged materials inside.

Our water damage restoration technicians can make cuts to drywall and remove any affected flooring. Afterward, before a rebuild, our technicians can set up ozone machines inside of your emptied home to combat the foul smell the black water brought into your home. Once finished, we can leave your home to you, as if the flood never occurred.

If black water spills into your home and causes flood damage, never wait. Immediately contact SERVPRO of Paducah at 270-443-4555.

Conditions In Paducah Might Be Right For Mold

1/16/2020 (Permalink)

Mold Growth Extensive Water Damage leads to Microbial Growth

SERVPRO knows what to do if mold grows in your home.

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively re mediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at 270-443-4555

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, "For each year from 2014 to 2016, an estimated 2,400 residential building fires were reported to fire departments in the U.S. on Thanksgiving Day and caused an estimated 5 deaths, 25 injuries and $19 million in property loss." While you might be saying to yourself, 'that would never be me,' fires unfortunately do not care how nice your home is or how many family members you've invited for dinner.

For traditional home-cooks, follow these tips below:

  • ALWAYS remain in the kitchen while your turkey is grilling, broiling, or being fried.
  • If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, make sure to at least stay in the house while your turkey is being prepared. Try to stay in the kitchen if possible.
  • Keep any flammable items away from the stove top.
  • Keep all areas utilized for cooking clean.
  • If a fire does start and you are unsure of what to do, simply exit the house and call your local fire-fighting team.

For cooks looking to use a turkey frier, make sure to educate yourself and properly prepare before attempting to use this method.

  • Set up the frier more than 10 feet away from your house.
  • Ensure that your frier is set on flat ground. Do NOT set your frier on any uneven surface.
  • Use a thawed and dried turkey. Extra water will cause the oil to bubble wildly.
  • Have a fire extinguisher close by.

What does 24 hour services mean for you?

8/13/2019 (Permalink)

Damage doesn't follow time constraints

In many restoration situations, immediate action is very important, if not crucial to the salvation of your items and the severity of the damage done. Therefore, it is not possible for SERVPRO of Paducah to only operate eight hours a day.

Damage worsens quickly

Perhaps the most time sensitive form of damage is water damage.

  • Within minutes of exposure to water, your belongings and the structure of your home will begin to absorb the damaging fluids. Paper goods swell and upholstery is soaked.

This is a common side effect of every case of water damage. But when you begin to wait, things slowly go downhill...

  • In hours one to 24, drywall begins to breakdown. A musty odor will begin to appear and furniture swells and cracks.
  • In hours 24 to 48, serious biohazard contamination is possible and metal begins to rust and corrode. Many other side effects appear during this time.
  • After a week, cost increases dramatically and residents are at a serious health risk.

With SERVPRO, help is always here

There is not much typical emergency response services can do when it comes to structural damage. Their job is to protect the citizensnot their homes

Whether it's 3 P.M. or 3 A.M., SERVPRO is always ready to jump into action. We will immediately begin to clean waste and provide the comfort and peace of mind that you will desperately need.

If you have found yourself in the face of a disaster in the early hours of the morning, never hesitate to give the SERVPRO of Paducah a call at (270)-443-4555.

Time for Air Duct Restoration?

8/8/2019 (Permalink)

It doesn't always require a disaster to call SERVPRO of Paducah to ask for help; sometimes it's the little things, such as air duct repair, that SERVPRO tackles with ease. But what are the signs you need your air ducts cleaned?

  1. You haven’t changed the air filter in months
  2. The vent covers have visible dust
  3. You detect mold in or around your HVAC system
  4. Airflow isn't consistent from room to room
  5. You can hear noises in the duct work

Although these signs point to an issue, it can be very difficult to detect where the issue stems from and how it can be solved without the help of a professional. Air ducts are complex systems, and SERVPRO of Paducah is just the business to call for both guidance and service. SERVPRO can tell you whether your system needs a duct cleaning, air conditioner maintenance, a replacement part, or other HVAC work.

If you suspect damage in your air ducts due to one of the signs above, call SERVPRO of Paducah at (270)-443-4555.

Everything You Need to Know About Oven Fires

8/8/2019 (Permalink)

The Common Culprit

The most common source for house fires is in the kitchen. Oven fires are very scary, but with preparation and proper care, they are easily prevented and contained.

There are several different reasons oven fires can occur.

  • Food scraps or other items residing in the bottom of your oven can lead to a fire.
  • Forgetting something in the oven can also lead to burned food, lots of smoke and in some instances, a fire.
  • Grease can splatter and cause a flame
  • The batter from food in the oven can overflow and cause a fire.
  • Some people have reported fires starting when the self-cleaning feature is turned on.

The Oven is on Fire. What do you do??

  1. If you do not have a fire extinguisher, leave the oven door closed.
  2. Turn off the oven and allow the fire to burn out on its own.
  3. If it does not go out or worsens, open windows and call 911.
  4. If it does go out, open your windows.
  5. Carefully open the oven door and remove any items that are burned. It will be smoky so be careful.
  6. Allow the smoke to clear before examining the area to determine the cause of the fire.

Although step one might seem counterintuitive, starving the oven of oxygen is a great way for the fire to be extinguished. If you open the door the fire could easily expand elsewhere and result in disaster.

Preventative Steps to Take

  • Make sure the oven is clean before use
  • Do not leave cooking food unattended
  • When making cakes and pastries, place a slightly larger baking tray underneath your baking pan or cupcake tin
  • Put a cover on food that might splatter. When roasting, carefully drain some of the hot grease by removing the pan from the oven every half-hour or so.
  • Get your oven checked out by a professional to make sure it is working properly.

What is a Flash Flood?

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

Here in Paducah during a storm season, we oftentimes find flash flood warnings pop up on our phone screens. But what really is a flash flood? And can it actually affect us?

What is a flash flood?

Flash flooding can be defined as flooding that begins within six hours, and oftentimes within three hours, of heavy rainfall (or other cause).

Where do they occur?

The intensity of the rainfall, the location and distribution of the rainfall, the land use and topography, vegetation types and growth/density, soil type, and soil water-content all determine just how quickly the Flash Flooding may occur, and influence where it may occur.

Flash flooding is possible anywhere. It can occur in urban areas due to the lack of land area for water to infiltrate. It can also occur in rural areas where water already has a head start in occupying, such as streams or creeks.

How can it affect me?

Flash Flooding occurs so quickly that people are caught off-guard when the situation arises. The instance can become dangerous if they encounter high, fast-moving water while traveling. If people are at their homes or businesses, the water may rise quickly and trap them, or cause damage to the property.

While they may sound trivial, flash floods can be very dangerous if one is not prepared with knowledge on the nature of the flood. It is important to be prepared and pay attention to news reports and word-of-mouth accounts.

The Importance of Smoke Alarms

7/30/2019 (Permalink)

Don't skimp out with smoke alarm safety!

Are you taking necessary precautions to protect yourself and your family?

According to the National Safety Council, about three out of five fires that lead to death occur with the absence of smoke alarms. Although they can be pesky at times, it is crucial to have working fire alarms on every level of your home. It is recommended that you:

  • Target your smoke alarms to sit inside of bedrooms, high on walls or on the ceiling
  • Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms
  • Make sure your alarms are compatible with disabled members' needs, such as bed shakers for deaf family members
  • Test smoke alarms monthly/bimonthly
  • Replace batteries annually and take time to change batteries in your carbon monoxide detector
  • Replace smoke alarms that are 10 or more years old

Home fires are reported every 88 seconds. When smoke alarms sound, fires can spread at a rapid pace, often only leaving seconds to spare. Having smoke alarms is a necessity for your safety, as if a fire starts while you are asleep or unable to detect the incident, you are putting yourself in a lethal situation.

Firefighters Advising People to Stop Using Heat Lamps Inside Dog Houses

3/18/2019 (Permalink)

When the weather is cold at night, it is common for pet owners to worry about their pet’s safety. However, using heat lamps inside your pet’s outdoor house can be life threatening for your entire family.  Now firefighters are warning people to stop using heat lamps inside dog houses.

SERVPRO of Paducah responded to a call at a residence that had a fire caused from a heat lamp that ignited straw bedding and spread to the home. By the time firefighters arrived, the flames breached the roof and attic causing extensive structural damage. The front part of the roof will need to be completely removed to replace all the rafters that were charred. There was also extensive smoke and water damage.

Fire Fighters encourage people utilizing heating devises for the purpose of keeping animals or livestock warm to use extreme caution when placing in a confined space or area. There are other alternatives to keeping your pets warm during the winter like blankets, thermo beds or bringing your pets indoors.

If your home has been damaged due to fire, contact SERVPRO of Paducah today.

Mold Prevention Tips

3/18/2019 (Permalink)

Mold is a common household problem, developing in warm, damp environments. Mold can be colored green, purple, white, and orange. While mold plays an important role outside in the environment, breaking down dead plants, mold is unwelcome in homes.

Any home or business can quickly become infested with mold with the introduction of a water source, like a roof or plumbing leak. Mold can spread throughout a property in as little as 48-72 hours, and can produce allergens and irritants that have the potential to cause other health effects.

Showers and bathrooms are a common location for mold to grow, but it is possible for mold to grow anywhere in a home. Mold can come inside a home from an outside growth through inadequately sealed windows or doors. Mold spores cannot be eliminated entirely, but they will not grow if the environment is dry and well ventilated. Mold growth can be prevented by ensuring if water damage occurs, clean up occurs quickly. Using air conditioners during humid seasons and exhaust fans in kitchen can help prevent mold from growing.

Other areas to monitor moisture to prevent mold growth: exterior walls and surfaces in need of insulation where condensation can build, air conditioner drip pans, check for leaks around refrigerator, ensure crawl spaces are well ventilated, and check for leaks around a tub.

These are a few simple tips for making sure mold is not growing in your home. If you do discover a mold growth, SERVPRO of Paducah provides mold remediation services for all types of residential and commercial properties.  If you suspect that your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of Paducah Professionals can inspect and assess your property. If mold is found, they have the training, equipment, and expertise to handle the situation.

Causes of Commercial Water Damage

3/15/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage caused from faulty sprinkler system.

When business owners think of water damage, they often picture a massive storm wiping out power lines, flooding offices, and shutting down businesses for days at a time. It is true that commercial water damage is often the result of floods and water that stems from weather events and storms.   However, many entrepreneurs and business space renters forget that storms and severe weather aren't the only causes of floods and water damage.

Here are some of the typical causes of water damage to commercial buildings.

1. Malfunctioning sprinkler systems Older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. While such sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement. This could easily damage inventory and business assets. \

2. Damaged appliances and equipment This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that has appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.

3. Broken pipes and plumbing Just like in a residence, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails water damage could be the result.

4. Backed up sewer lines This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated Black Water which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.

If your business has suffered commercial water damage, SERVPRO of Paducah will get you back up and running again. Call us anytime 24/7 at (270) 443-4555 for fast help.

How to Prevent a House Fire

3/14/2019 (Permalink)

According to the American Red Cross, house fires cause over $7 billion in property damage each year. Being prepared and conducting regular safety checks can help keep you from adding to that number.

Here are simple things SERVPRO of Paducah recommends you to do to protect your home and loved ones from falling victim to a house fire.

Test your smoke alarms.

Properly maintain your smoke alarms by testing the batteries once a month. If they’re not working, replace them immediately.

Inspect heating sources.

Regardless of what kind of primary heating you have in your home, an annual inspection will reduce your risk of fire.

Change filters regularly to avoid build-up of dust and lint that can easily catch fire.

If you use space heaters, carefully inspect them before and after each use and place them at least three feet away from anything combustible.

Keep the stove and oven clear.

Don’t leave anything flammable near the stove or oven. Make sure curtains don’t hang over the stove, and never rest towels or a cookbook on the stove.

Stay in the kitchen.

Don’t leave a hot cooking surface unattended. Whether it’s a pot on the stove or an electric griddle, you need to be close by. If you have to leave the room, take the pot off the stove or turn off the griddle first.

Check the dryer.

If you have a gas-powered dryer, have it inspected once a year to make sure all connections are secure. No matter what type of dryer you have, always clean out the lint trap after a load is finished. Regularly check behind and around the dryer for pockets of lint or items of laundry that have fallen under or behind.

Maintain cords.

Regularly check the condition of cords and watch out for frayed wires: repair or replace cords with frayed wires immediately. Electrical cords can produce heat, so don’t trap them under a rug or between furniture and the wall.

Store flammable products properly.

Many household cleaners and cosmetic products like shaving cream and hair spray are flammable. Keep flammable products away from heat, including exposure to sunlight. Designate a cool, dark cupboard for flammable products and make sure all family members know where they go.

Be careful with candles.

Never leave candles unattended and always keep them away from flammable items like blankets and curtains. Place candles in secure, tip-proof holders and extinguish them before leaving or going to sleep.

Use the fireplace responsibly.

To keep errant sparks from escaping, install a durable metal fire screen in front of your fireplace. Don’t leave a fire unattended, and give ashes ample time to cool down before disposing of them. Always place fireplace ash in a dedicated metal container that isn’t used for any other household refuse.

Keep fire extinguishers handy.

Stock key areas of your home with fire extinguishers. At the very least, keep one in the kitchen and others near high-risk areas like a fireplace. Regularly review the instructions and make sure all members of the home know how to properly use the extinguisher.

Fire damage can be devastating, but you can minimize the risk of fire in your home. Make these practices part of your fire safety plan and review them regularly.

How to Protect your Home From Mold

3/12/2019 (Permalink)

If you think you have a mold or mildew problem in your home, it is crucial to call out a professional as soon as possible. Mold spores are dangerous and can pose a health risk to anyone that may be living in a house with mold, including pets. These safety risks may be amplified if a person has asthma or another medical condition, so mold is not something you should mess around with. If there is any sort of indication that you may have mildew or mold, call SERVPRO of Paducah today.

One of the biggest problems when it comes to mold is water. Water and moisture create the perfect environment for mold to thrive in, so you may have more than a single problem on your hands. A home may have a leak in the roof, causing water to drop down into the attic of the home. This can easily cause mold, while the residents of the home may be completely unaware that there is a problem developing. You may also have a crawl space under your house where water can end up collecting. Pooling water in a crawlspace is extremely common in areas that get a lot of rain each year. However, not too many people even notice there is water collecting under their home, as it truly is out of sight. Stagnant water can create mold under your home, as it really is a perfect combination for mold to grow. Mold thrives in the dark, but also needs moisture and warmth. Any areas of your home that are dark and damp can become a problem given the right conditions and enough time.

Mold waits for nothing and will continue to grow until you take care of the problem, which can end up posing a huge health risk. Even if you don’t think you have a mold or mildew problem, it is a great idea to be safe and have someone evaluate your house every few years. Call SERVPRO of Paducah today to schedule your mold inspection.

How to prevent frozen pipes to avoid thousands of dollars in damage

3/7/2019 (Permalink)

With cold weather, it’s important to prevent pipes from freezing, because broken pipes can cause thousands of dollars in water damage.

When the outside temperature drops to around 20 degrees Fahrenheit, pipes may freeze.

The water freezing itself is not what causes the pipes to burst. It’s actually the pressure that builds up inside the pipes that causes the burst. So it would, in turn, bust, and then, once the water started to thaw, it would then flood your home.

to prevent frozen pipes, it’s important to be familiar with the plumbing in your home.

Knowing the way your plumbing runs, and if you have the type of plumbing that’s exposed to the elements, it is important to insulate your pipes.

Here are some of the following ways to prevent pipes from freezing:

— Let warm water drip overnight, especially from a faucet near an outside wall.

— Keep your thermostat set at a consistent temperature during the day and night.

— Keep cabinet doors open to let heat reach the pipes under sinks and appliances near outside walls.

— If you plan to travel, set your thermostat no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Shutting off and draining the water system is also advisable.

How to Stay Safe in a Thunderstorm

3/7/2019 (Permalink)

Thunder roars loudly and can be very frightening – but by itself can’t really hurt anyone. Its two most fearsome companions however, can be very dangerous indeed:

  • Lightning killed an average of 31 people a year between 2006 and 2015, and injured another 279.1 Your estimated odds of being struck in an 80-year lifespan are 1 in 13,000.1 And yes, those are higher odds than winning a fortune in the lottery.
  • Hail can happen during any strong storm, hurling chunks of ice to the earth at speeds up to 120 mph – and they range in size from a pea to a grapefruit! That’s a hefty projectile.

So to protect yourself, your family and home from these real dangers takes a little bit of knowledge and preparation. Here are some hail and lighting safety tips:

Protecting yourself

Know the “30/30” rule: When you see a lightning flash, start counting. If you don't make it to 30 before hearing the thunder, head indoors. Then stay indoors until 30 minutes after hearing the last boom of thunder.

If you’re already indoors

  • Avoid using corded phones and electronics such as computers or power tools. Electrical wires can conduct lightning.
  • Don't use your cell phone during a thunderstorm.
  • Don't wash your hands, shower, wash dishes or do laundry. Metal pipes in the plumbing can also conduct lightning.
  • High winds and hail can shatter glass, so stay away from windows, skylights and doors.
  • Keep drapes and blinds closed to prevent hail-shattered glass from blowing in or flying around.

If you're outside when a storm hits

  • Take shelter when you see dark clouds or lightning, hear thunder or feel hail.
  • Head for an enclosed building, rather than a carport or open garage.
  • No enclosed structure? Get inside a hardtop, all-metal car, truck or SUV. Avoid leaning against vehicles.
  • Get off bicycles and motorcycles.
  • If no shelter from lightning is available, squat down and put your hands on your knees with your head in between to make yourself a smaller target.
  • If you’re in the water, head for shore immediately and avoid metal objects. Water and metal can both carry an electrical current.
  • If you're in a group of people, spread out.
  • Take care of your pets by bringing them inside. Doghouses are not lightning- or hail-proof.

Storm and flood damage can be devastating. Immediate action is needed, and you need the company with storm damage experience. SERVPRO of Paducah’s Professionals have the expertise and the resources to handle any size disaster and can respond immediately to storm and flooding conditions.

Freezing Temperatures Are Here in Paducah

12/11/2018 (Permalink)

Whether there is heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, or sleet and snow; all of these can cause property damage. You can't control Mother Nature but you can be prepared so here are some tips to help you:

-Check for tree limbs and branches that might have fallen.

-Roofs, pipes and gutters should all be inspected and make sure they are in proper working order. Clear gutters from debris, a damming effect could cause roof damage or interior water problems. Downspouts should be facing away from the home or building.

-Clean your chimneys and exhaust systems from debris.

-Test your gas lines for leaks.

-Inspect your property for proper drainage.

-Protect pipes from freezing by allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If any pipes are under cabinets leave the cabinets open. Make sure exterior pipes are properly insulated.

-If there are any outdoor faucets, you might want to shut the water off.

-Make sure all exterior doors and windows have sufficient weather stripping.

Paducah Businesses; Do You Have Frozen Pipes?

12/11/2018 (Permalink)

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.

Pipes that freeze most frequently are:

  • Pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines.
  • Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
  • Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.
How to Protect Pipes From Freezing

Before the onset of cold weather, protect your pipes from freezing by following these recommendations:

  • Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines unless directed. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.
  • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
  • Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
  • Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
  • Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.
  • Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from freezing.
How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
  • When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
  • If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
How to Thaw Frozen Pipes
  • If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.
  • Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.
  • Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.
  • Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.
  • Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.

Solar Panels vs. Nature: What Could Crack the Cells

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

Solar panel damage is rare, but when it does happen, it’s usually as a result of a hard-hitting storm. There are a few things you can do to prepare if you know a storm is on the way to Murray, Benton, Cadiz, & Princeton, KY. The examples below of instances where panels stayed intact may give you peace of mind that yours could also stay safe.

When Nature Strikes

Solar panels are usually built to hold up even in the most extreme of circumstances. However, there are some common causes to damaged panels.

• Hail (especially when it hits the same spot repeatedly)
• High winds (uplift can happen when wind blows between your roof and panels)
• Roof damage (if your roof wasn’t built well to begin with, the panels can fly off with it)

Where Solar Panels Stayed Intact

Storms have tested panels with much success in recent years:

• Hurricane Maria: 180 mph winds didn’t even leave a scratch on a 645 kW solar array on a VA hospital in San Juan. It operated well after the storm, even though nearly all of the island was without power.
• Hurricane Sandy: panel damage was few and far between in New Jersey when this hurricane hit in 2012, days after the state installed dozens of panels.
• Severe hail in Denver: only one out of more than 3,000 panels on the National Renewable Energy Laboratory campus was damaged in this rare storm.

What To Do Before and After the Storm

Prepare for a storm the same way you would without solar panels. Don’t try to remove them, as the racks are built to handle the storm. You may want to take pictures of the system just in case. If the storm does cause an issue, you can show those pictures to your insurance agent. Most providers cover panels, but you may want to double check before it’s too late.

When you do experience panel damage, don’t try to fix it yourself. Always call a professional in Murray, Benton, Cadiz & Princeton, KY, first.

Paducah, Mayfield and Murray Smoke and Soot Cleanup

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Paducah will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

With severe weather season fast approaching our area, it is important to be reminded of some basic safety tips in order to stay prepared and alert during our ever changing weather patterns.

From the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management:

“When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”

  • Before a thunderstorm arrives, know the key warning signs: dark clouds, lightening, and thunder

  • Get informed with a weather radio or by watching the news

  • Have an emergency kit on hand that includes flashlights, battery operated weather radio, first aid kit, food and water, and essential medicines

  • Stay inside and sheltered. If outside, move indoors or into a vehicle. Get out of water immediately. If trapped outside, make yourself as small as possible in a low lying area

  • Make sure to wait at least 30 minutes after the storm has passed before going outside

In addition, in order to be prepared for a tornado:

  • Have a family tornado plan in place and practice a family tornado drill

  • Watch for weather signs like dark greenish skies, large hail, dark low clouds and load roaring sounds

  • Put as many walls and floors between you and the tornado as possible

  • Flying debris is the greatest danger during a tornado

  • If in a mobile home – GET OUT! Find a neighbor, underground shelter, or permanent structure for safety

As a trusted leader in emergency response for our area, SERVPRO of Paducah is committed to helping our community be prepared for weather emergencies. As a 24 hour emergency response partner, SERVPRO is dedicated to providing immediate and professional services to you and your family should the need arise during this severe weather season.

Two Reasons to Address Mold in Your Paducah Home Immediately

5/24/2018 (Permalink)

Mold in basement stairwell.

The presence of mold leaves behind an unmistakable musty odor. Although this fungus can develop inside a house when it is simply a little too humid, it is more likely to develop after flood water damages the premises. When that flooding is accompanied by sewage loss, the contaminants only exacerbate the problem. Homeowners in Paducah, KY should try to prevent mold growth entirely. However, if mold does develop, then you need to address it right away before a bad stench turns into something much worse.

1. Structural Damage

Mold is particularly destructive to certain materials, including gypsum board, plaster and wood. Over time, these materials may weaken and change color. You may not even see the damage if the item is painted, but the paint merely hides the mildew. The only way to ensure your home remains structurally sound is to remove all presence of mold. Certain structures may need to be replaced entirely to make sure your house is safe to live in.

2. Rapid Growth

Mold growth can get out of hand in just 24 hours. It can spread exponentially when exposed to the right conditions. Leaks, condensation and high humidity can accelerate the growth process, causing the mold to overtake entire sections of walls and flooring. Over time, this can lead to toxic black mold

An even more dangerous aspect is that visible mold is only half the story. If you see mold, then there is a very high likelihood there is even more growing out of sight. You need someone to come out to your place immediately to ensure your house remains mold-free.

When bringing in a professional team in Paducah, KY to address mold in your home, it is vital that every sign of it is removed. This includes the mold you see on the wall as well as spores that have entered the air. Without addressing the problem comprehensively, the mold growth will simply resume, sometimes in less than a day. Visit http://www.SERVPROpaducah.com/ for more information on storm damage.

4 Important Steps You Should Take To Reduce Space Heater Fires

5/24/2018 (Permalink)

Space heaters can be very convenient, especially if you have one room in your home that never seems to get enough heat from your central HVAC system. Whether you use a space heater regularly or you only pull it out on the coldest winter days, here are four important steps you should always take to prevent fire damage in Paducah, KY, from a burned space heater.

1. Clean It Thoroughly

Before you use your space heater for the first time, make sure you clean all visible surfaces thoroughly. Dust and other small particles tend to build up on the heater’s surface and could potentially cause the unit to overheat or catch fire if not removed regularly.

2. Leave Plenty of Empty Space Around Your Heater

Never put your heater up against a blanket, piece of furniture or any other item. If you do, you’re likely to have a burned space heater before long. Space heaters should always have at least three feet of empty space around them, free from furniture, carpets and other items.

3. Keep Heaters Away From Kids

Don’t operate a space heater in an area where kids frequently play. To reduce the risk of fire if a child does accidentally knock over the heater, make sure you purchase one that has an emergency shut-off mechanism. You should also keep pets away from heaters whenever possible.

4. Never Leave a Heater Unattended

Never leave a space heater unattended. If you plan to leave the room for a few minutes or a few hours, turn the space heater off beforehand. You can easily turn it back on when you return.

Following these preventatives steps will minimize your chances of fire damage while warming your home. If you experience a burned space heater or fire damage even after taking these preventative steps, a fire damage restoration professional can help with your smoke cleanup and restoration needs.

Controlling Mold in Your Paducah, Kentucky Home or Business

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is a sneaky threat that can lurk in unsuspecting places, such as this attic.

You Can Control Mold

Inside your home you can control mold growth by:

  • Controlling humidity levels;
  • Promptly fixing leaky roofs, windows, and pipes;
  • Thoroughly cleaning and drying after flooding;
  • Ventilating shower, laundry, and cooking areas.

If mold is growing in your home, you need to clean up the mold and fix the moisture problem. Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup of household laundry bleach in 1 gallon of water.

Mold growth, which often looks like spots, can be many different colors, and can smell musty. If you can see or smell mold, a health risk may be present. You do not need to know the type of mold growing in your home, and CDC does not recommend or perform routine sampling for molds. No matter what type of mold is present, you should remove it. Since the effect of mold on people can vary greatly, either because of the amount or type of mold, you can not rely on sampling and culturing to know your health risk. Also, good sampling for mold can be expensive, and standards for judging what is and what is not an acceptable quantity of mold have not been set. The best practice is to remove the mold and work to prevent future growth.

If you choose to use bleach to clean up mold:

  • Never mix bleach with ammonia or other household cleaners. Mixing bleach with ammonia or other cleaning products will produce dangerous, toxic fumes.
  • Open windows and doors to provide fresh air.
  • Wear non-porous gloves and protective eye wear.
  • If the area to be cleaned is more than 10 square feet, consult the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guide titled Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings. Although focused on schools and commercial buildings, this document also applies to other building types.
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using bleach or any other cleaning product.

How to Protect Pipes from Freezing in Paducah, Kentucky

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

As a partner with the American Red Cross, here is some great information on freezing pipes that they have on their website! Check it out!
Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem

How To Tell Mold From Mildew: 3 Key Identifiers

5/17/2018 (Permalink)

Mold found lurking in two-by-fours behind drywall.

Battling mold and mildew in your Paducah, KY home can be a year-round housecleaning challenge. From preventing costly mold damage to scrubbing away mildew in the shower, fighting household fungi can take time and a considerable amount of elbow grease. However, trying to clean up mold on your own may cause the further spread of spores and increase the risk of a severe infestation. Knowing how to tell the difference between mold and mildew can help you save time, money and let you know whether you need the services of a certified mold remediation and removal company.

1. Texture

Although mold and mildew are both part of the fungi family, they have different textures that are usually visible to the naked eye. Mildew growth is typically thin and slimy, while mold is usually fuzzy or wooly. You can perform a quick test by adding a few drops of bleach to the suspect area, as mildew grows lighter on contact while mold retains its color.

2. Color

You may be able to tell mold from mildew by the color of the growth. Mildew is usually grey or light yellow as it spreads, while mold growth comes in a variety of colors, from green to white to black. If you suspect what you see is black mold, it is a good idea to avoid touching the area and call in mold damage specialists to treat the problem instead, as this type of fungus can be aggressive and will likely need professional intervention.

3. Growth Pattern

While both mold and mildew have a few similar qualities, the way each grows and spreads can help you tell them apart. Mildew is a surface fungus that can be wiped away easily, as it develops in flat, thin patches. Mold spores, however, penetrate the surface of any material they attach to and grow into wide patches that can be difficult to remove.

It can be difficult to tell mold from mildew when you encounter either in your Paducah, KY home. However, knowing the characteristics of each can help you prevent mold damage and keep your home clean and sanitary.

Preventing Space Heater Fires in Paducah, Kentucky

5/17/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke from fires causes significant damage to homes.

Approximately 25,000 house fires every year are attributed to space heaters. User error is the primary cause, although heaters without essential safety features may malfunction and pose a fire risk. Here are five ways that you can prevent a burned space heater from starting a fire in your home.

1. Keep a minimum of three feet between space heaters and combustibles. Combustibles include bedding, curtains, and upholstered furniture. You should also only operate a space heater on a hard, level, non-flammable surface.

2. Don't operate heaters unattended around pets or kids. Children, cats, and dogs don't understand the principles of fire safety.

3. Purchase a space heater with safety features. One of the best ways to prevent a burned space heater is to purchase a model that automatically shuts off when it overheats. Check the model you are considering for a safety certification label, ground fault circuit interrupter plug, and a sturdy cord that is at least six feet long. Make sure the heater has all of the features you need to stay warm while running a very low risk of fire.

4. Turn off or unplug heaters when not in use. This can reduce the risk of a fire starting when you are elsewhere in your home or away from home.

5. Avoid plugging other electronics into the same outlet as a space heater. You should also never use an extension cord, as this equipment heightens the overheating risk.

Your heater can only work as designed if it is kept in working condition. You may need to regularly clean the filter on your space heater to prevent it from overheating. In addition to following these steps, you should also test the smoke alarms in your home and replace batteries or damaged units. If a burned space heater does cause a fire, contact a smoke cleanup service in Paducah, KY.

How Water Damage Can Hurt Your Business and What You Can Do

5/16/2018 (Permalink)

A water line break caused this church in Paducah to flood. This before pictures shows just how much water can accumulate as a result of such an event.

Whether it comes from a broken pipe, a sprinkler malfunction or an overflowing toilet, water damage can be inconvenient and costly in Paducah, KY. It can cause harm not only to your building but to electronics and furniture as well.

In What Ways Can Commercial Water Damage Happen?

Water damage can be devastating to a company. The following list outlines some of the most common ways your building can suffer from a water disaster:

• One of the toilets in the restroom leaked overnight.
• A broken pipe or water main flooded your building.
• The fire sprinklers went off, causing an indoor rainstorm all over the office.

What Gets Damaged During an Indoor Flood?

Only a few inches of water covering the floor can cause costly damage to the carpets and walls and invite mold and wood rot. Furniture and expensive office equipment can be ruined. In severe flooding, the water may seep into the walls and damage electrical wires.

How Do You Deal With the Aftermath of Commercial Water Damage?

You should address water damage as soon as possible. Your water repair company in Paducah, KY, can get started on preventing mold, cleaning soaked carpets and restoring waterlogged surfaces. You should also contact your insurance company for information on flood and water damage coverage.

How Can You Prevent Water Damage?

Regularly have your plumbing and fire sprinklers inspected and maintained to prevent leaks and burst pipes. If a major storm is approaching, prepare by placing sandbags around entrances and moving important documents and computers to a safe place. Install a water shut-off valve under your water heaters. Unfortunately, not all disasters can be prevented, but these tips can minimize the likelihood of severe damage.

Don’t let a broken pipe or toilet overflow disrupt your productivity. When you take swift action to prevent or address a flood, your water damage experts may be able to help you avoid a costly emergency and keep your business—not burst pipes—running smoothly.

Having the right equipment during a fire can save your home –and your life!

5/16/2018 (Permalink)

Kitchen fire at local apartment causes severe damage.

Fires and fire damage are common tragedies among homeowners. But, there are ways to lessen the damage. SERVPRO® of Paducah is Here to Help so fires don’t ruin your summer. One is having a proper fire extinguisher --especially, during grilling season. Make sure you follow these rules from our friends at the American Red Cross when it comes to having a good extinguisher:

  • Always have more than one working extinguisher in your home.
  • Install extinguishers high on the wall and away from any heat sources.
  • If an extinguisher doesn’t work on a fire immediately, drop it and get out. Most portable extinguishers empty in 8 seconds.
  • Make sure the gauge on your extinguisher is properly charged.

Once you have the right fire extinguisher, always remember PASS:

P- Pull the pin and hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you.

A- Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

S- Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly

S- Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

We hope these tips keep fires and fire damage from your homes. But, if you have fire damage and need SERVPRO, we are always Here to Help. Call SERVPRO® of Paducah at (270) 443-4555.

Keep Calm During the Storm with SERVPRO of Paducah

5/16/2018 (Permalink)

With severe weather season here in our area, it is important to be reminded of some basic safety tips in order to stay prepared and alert during our ever changing weather patterns.

Conditions In Paducah Might Be Right For Mold

1/2/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Paducah knows what to do if mold grows in your home.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Paducah to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at 270-443-4555.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Paducah for mold remediation services.

MOLD: The Silent Threat

12/26/2017 (Permalink)

Mold in Attic Due to Roof Leak

12/22/2017 (Permalink)

Arson Job: Where the Fire Started

One of the most difficult parts of working for SERVPRO is seeing our customers go through dramatic events. Though these events are the cause of headaches and heartaches, they generally occur at the blame of faulty equipment or unavoidable weather incidents. However, one Paducah rental property owner experienced an event far more incomprehensible: a property of his was the subject of arson.

According to the National Fire Prevention Association, arson is the leading cause of fire-related property damage in the United States.

When the property owner was alerted of the incident, SERVPRO of Paducah was called to the scene. The rental property was gutted from the inside out. Everything from the carpet where the fire started to the bathroom fixtures on the other end of the property had to be replaced. This job was completed swiftly and efficiently by the crew at SERVPRO of Paducah to ensure the safe return of the tenant.

Paducah, Mayfield and Murray Smoke and Soot Cleanup

6/30/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Paducah will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Does Your McCracken or Calloway County Home Have A Mold Problem?

6/7/2017 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Graves County Middle School Fire

11/2/2016 (Permalink)

Our middle school fire alarm sounded in the middle of the night recently. A soft drink machine malfunctioned, causing a small fire. Of course, we are grateful for the firefighters who extinguished the blaze quickly. As often happens, the need for cleanup was more widespread than the fire itself. SERVPRO of Paducah workers responded immediately to take care of the damage the unexpected fire caused with precision and care. They had school ready for students when they arrived. The SERVPRO team stayed on site until everything had returned to normal and well into the day after the fire. Throughout their stay, every worker was friendly and highly professional! Their work was efficient and complete. I cannot imagine a better response than SERVPRO of Paducah accomplished! –

Crazy July Storms in Western Kentucky

9/12/2016 (Permalink)

July 4th is usually the premier weekend of summer In Western Kentucky, but this past July proved to be very different.  Storms took over the area with torrential rain and excessive winds which led to major flooding and uprooted trees.  The area was faced with severe wind damage and several roads were washed away.  With the phones ringing off the hook, our crews hit the pavement in full force to take care of our community.  Many homes and businesses were faced with large tree limbs through their roofs, allowing heavy rain to enter their attics; others encountered flooded basements. All of these concerns are important to SERVPRO.  We know how urgent the need is to respond to these kinds of emergencies! It’s your home---your business--- our concern. When it comes to our community we stand together!
